Sharky is our medium capacity Backpack designed in collaboration with Carryology.
Sharky is our most technical piece to date. Inspired by our Barbary messenger bag we have created a medium capacity backpack, with a fully opening front panel for easy access when packing, making it suitable as a travel bag or as a daily use backpack.
Sharky is handmade in Somerset, England. The main body is constructed from 102gsm Dyneema Composite Fabric CT5K in combination with Italian veg tanned bridle leather on the main flap and all the external binding and the back and base panels are fully padded and finished in a single piece of rumbled Italian veg tan leather, for grip and comfort. There is a subtle mini stash pocket on each side of the pack.
The shoulder straps are based upon our Barbary courier bag straps, heavily padded with veg tan leather binding and lash patches, on the underside they also use the rumbled leather, the straps use British made webbing and Cobra Side Bloc tension locks in black.
The main flap is secured with two 25mm Cobra buckles. When open this reveals the double asymmetric front sleeve pockets, one has a hidden zipper for security. The Aqua guard zippers mean the entire front panel can be opened for efficient packing and access. Internally there is a a zippered stash pocket on the front panel and a floating laptop sleeve with an extra stash sleeve on it. All is lined in our Crank pattern, hand printed on cotton drill in London.
Dyneema is a technical fabric initially developed for strong, light weight racing yacht sails, (previously known as Cuben Fibre) it is now used for military and high performance industries where it's strength to weight ratio is coveted. In its cord form the fibre is 15 times stronger than steel cable of the same guage, as a fabric it has unsurpassed strength to weight. The Dyneema is so thin it is laminated to a 150 Dernier Polyester, the hand 'feel' best described as 'paper like' 'crunchy' feel, it also holds its shape very well, and is remarkably lightweight. Dyneema is manufactured by DSM in The Netherlands, find out more about it here.
Veg Tan leather refers to 'Vegetable Tanned Leather' which avoids the use of Chromium and other nasties by using the traditional tanning method using tree bark and acorns in combination with oil, this leather is also often referred to as 'Bridle' leather and is extremely hard wearing and develops a beautiful patina through your use. All our leather is top grain / full grain leather and sourced from Italy. This video gives a good overview of the tanning process.
